Learning the basics

You play as an agent in a team of four other players, each of whom chooses their own unique agent. The game consists of multiple rounds – the first person to win 13 of them wins the game. Each team of five players will be assigned a role: attacker or defender, switching sides after 12 rounds. The attacker must place a spike (a powerful bomb) and the defender must defuse it or prevent it from being placed.

Keeping it quiet

Valorant is all about visibility and it can be manipulated in many ways. The main thing you want to avoid is having other teams recognise you or your teammates as you move around the map. Unless you are surrounded or being chased, you should try to slow down and walk rather than run, as the latter will make noise and alert the enemy to your position. Flashing lights are very useful for this as they will obscure the enemy team’s view. Each projectile is individually deployable and anyone who sees it will be blinded for 2-4 seconds. Be careful though – this includes those who trigger the flash and their teammates.

Always communicate with your teammates

Talk to your teammates before the match to discuss plans and strategies, and call out enemy positions, in-game movement and item drop locations during the match. It is also helpful to discuss after the match whether the tactics worked. When calling out positions during the game, be as specific as possible. Miscommunication can cause problems for your team and allow your opponent to claim victory.

Choose a hero that fits your style

Agents are divided into four categories: Duelists, Sentinels, Initiators and Controllers. Duelists specialise in attacking and planting spikes and using flashes to clear areas on the map. Some of the agents that fall into this category are Jett, Phoenix, Raze, Reyna, Yoru and Neon.

Sentinels are primarily defenders, keeping stations locked and protected from enemy encroachment. They set up static barriers to stop incoming enemies and aim to completely cut off parts of the map. Agents that fall into this category include Chamber, Cypher, Killjoy and Sage.

The spearhead usually plays an offensive role, entering enemy territory and revealing their position to their teammates, leaving them vulnerable to attack. It is both aggressive and strategic. The agents in this role are Breach, KAY/O, Skye, Sova and Fade.

The controllers “sculpt” the map, control the enemy and create cover for their team. They are responsible for the visibility of the team on the other side. To play this role, focus on agents such as Astra, Brimstone, Omen or Viper.
